Prices

Home

The prices quoted in my notes are for two people having a middling set menu, or three courses from the carte, with a bottle of wine and coffee. For older reviews add something for inflation. If our meal opted for a menu that isn't available at all times I mention this and indicate the likely increase in cost. We usually have a set menu or whats often called the "menu carte" offering a selection from the carte at a discount. For wine assume spending around 15€ to 20€ a bottle rising to double this for the more prestigious restaurants.

In France, and indeed most of mainland Europe, the price of a meal includes service. For special service then leaving a few euros is fine.

Guide Books

For eating out and staying in France select an appropriate guide from the late Richard Binns. Richard's web site is maintained by his brother Keith and is packed with fascinating information and downloads including details on his publications.

The latest annual Gault Millau guide has good coverage of the whole of France. For online use then Mappy.fr links their interactive maps to Gault Millau restaurant and hotel basic facts, ratings and brief review. A downside is that the reviews seem to be a couple of years out of date. The Michelin guide is of course world famous. For restaurants the lack of descriptions and no differentiation below their renowned star rating system is a problem, but for driving instructions the site is superb.

My links page will help locate restaurants and guides with web sites. For Languedoc wine links and information see my Languedoc wine page.

By far the best place on the Web I know to ask about dining out in France (or indeed anywhere) is the egullet bulletin board. The quality, helpfulness and passion for dining out of the participants is top notch.

Last, but not least, many thanks to Sue for making these meals all the more enjoyable.
